DUTA PRESS RELEASE: September 27, 2018

DUTA Protests Tripartite MoU and Illegal Actions of Dyal Singh College Governing Body Chairman, outside DU EC Meeting                                                                     The DUTA carried out a major protest today, as a crucial meeting of the DU Executive Council began. Students and teachers collectively expressed their anger against the Tripartite MoU that the MHRD is forcing Delhi University to sign, in order to continue receiving funds from the UGC. This MoU undermines the autonomous Grant-based funding decisions of the UGC and simultaneously appropriates the entire funding function under the executive authority of the Government. Through the MoU, the MHRD allows itself the scope to bypass the UGC and set quantified performance targets for DU (as well as other central universities). These targets, set down in tabular form as Annexure to the MoU, are all oriented towards commercialisation. They compel the funds-receiving university to evaluate its own

FEDCUTA Statement, 24 September 2018

FEDCUTA condemns the situation of a 'war zone' created by the administration of Manipur University The FEDCUTA notes with alarm the turn of events at the Manipur University. A peaceful protest movement by the teachers, students and the university community to prevent agents of the suspended VC from vitiating the Visitorial Inquiry has resulted in a massive crackdown by the police and para military forces called in by these agents.  It is reported that over 90 students and six teachers have been arrested in a night long raid at the students hostel and teachers houses. The campus is tense and as yet there are no attempts to defuse the situation. It was earlier reported that the incumbent vice Chancellor had been suspended by the MHRD which had set up an Inquiry against him after the massive protests against him. The current crisis has been triggered by a false complaint lodged against protesting students and teachers, by an illegal Pro- Vice Chancello

DUTA Press Release: September 22, 2018

DUTA slams MHRD for forcing universities to sign Tripartite MoU to further its design to dismantle public funded higher education                                                                     The DUTA condemns the MHRD’s persistent attempts to force Delhi University to sign the Tripartite MoU between DU, MHRD and UGC under Rule 229(xi) of the General Financial Rules 2017.  Repeated threats, issued by the MHRD, that DU’s grants will be stopped unless the Tripartite MoU is signed, amounts to cheap arm-twisting and authoritarian suppression of DU’s academic independence. The MoU is both devious and pernicious. While it pretends to seek “qualitative improvement in output” “along with commensurate input requirements”, it binds university to commercialise its activities and ensure structures that facilitate private players in higher education. This Tripartite MoU does not involve any commitment on the part of the UGC and MHRD for making additional funds available to the u

FEDCUTA PRESS RELEASE, 9.9.2018

FEDCUTA stands in solidarity with Dr Prasad Pannian; demands withdrawal of his suspension orders The FEDCUTA notes with concern and condemns the suspension of Dr Prasad Pannian from the post of head of the Department of English and Comparative Literature at the Central University of Kerala. The suspension order served to Dr Pannian is shockingly for criticising the university on a Facebook post over the legal and police action initiated by the university against a vocal  dalit research scholar. From the available reports it appears that the scholar, Mr Ganthoti Nagar Anju, participated in a student protest in the university and unintentionally broke the glass of a fire hydrant. Dr Pannian was protesting this precise act of criminalisation by the university and the police of this action of the student in the course of a democratic protest. This attempt to criminalise protest and dissent as a whole by the university administration deserves wides
