FEDCUTA Press Release: 29 January 2018

FEDCUTA condemns physical assault on teachers at Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan

The FEDCUTA strongly condemns the physical assault on faculty members of Visva-Bharati including Prof. Sudipta Bhattacharyya (President, VBUFA), Dr. Bikash Chandra Gupta (Secretary, VBUFA), Dr. Biswajit Halder (EC member, VBUFA) and Prof. Tapas Kundu (Member, VBUFA) outside the office of the Registrar. This is not only an attack on some individuals but on the entire academic community of Visva-Bharati, founded by Rabindranath Tagore who championed personal freedom, freedom of speech and sanctity of academic environment.

The FEDCUTA demands immediate action against the miscreants and extends its solidarity to the members of the Visva-Bharati community. It also shares their resolve to continue to ensure that this institution of national importance remains a place where, in Tagore's words, "the mind is without fear and the head is held high". We also demand that a person of academic repute be immediately appointed as the VC of Visva-Bharati to end the ongoing stalemate and administrative anarchy which is harming the institution.
