DUTA PRESS RELEASE: August 10, 2017

DUTA condemns targeting of teachers in Dyal Singh College

The DUTA unequivocally condemns the Memo issued by the Dyal Singh College (Morning) Principal, at the behest of the Governing Body Chairman, to seven teachers of the college threatening legal action against them. This Memo directs a misplaced charge of misconduct against these teachers who had only been a part of a Staff Association delegation that had met the Governing Body to convey the teachers’ legitimate concerns regarding the issue of Dyal Singh Evening College’s conversion into a full-fledged day college.

The DUTA is of the opinion that the teachers did nothing that can remotely be construed as unwarranted or unbecoming of their station. They are well within their rights to represent collective concerns to the Governing Body. Hence, any threat of action against them is unacceptable and unless withdrawn, will invite a strong response from the DUTA.

The DUTA is also concerned about the increasing interference of the Governing Body Chairman in routine academic matters which do not fall in his purview. There are established Staff Council Committee for this purpose and statutory authority is vested with them. The Governing Body Chairman has no right to pass any order that is not in consonance with Staff Council decisions in matters related to academic functioning of the college.

The DUTA urges the College Principal to withdraw the Memo against the seven teachers immediately. It will contemplate a suitable course of action if this demand is not acceded to.
