PRINCIPAL VALSON THAMPU ATTEMPTING TO OVERHAUL CONSTITUTION OF ST STEPHENS ON EVE OF RETIREMENT The DUTA deplores the attempt by the Principal of St. Stephen's College Mr. Valson Thampu, to engineer major changes in the Constitution of St.Stephen's College just three months before his retirement from the post. A special meeting of the Governing Body has been called for this purpose tomorrow.  According to a representation submitted by thirty-seven permanent teachers of the college, the changes will alter the basic character of the college, and make its Governing Body subservient to the Supreme Council. It will alter service conditions of teachers and come into conflict with the Ordinances of Delhi University on these and other matters, such as minimum qualifications of Principal,  thereby endangering the recognition of the college as a Constituent College of Delhi University. This would, in turn, jeopardise the UGC grant given to the college and threaten the futu

Keep Education out of WTO/GATS, Thousands march to Parliament 27 Thousands of people from far and near, fom Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra, Telengana, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir and Delhi collected at Ramlila Maidan and then marched to Parliament Street demanding that the Government end the privatisation and commercialisation of Education and that Education be kept out of the WTO/GATS. Responding to the call of the National Platform in Defence of Education (NPDE), teachers from schools, universities and colleges, students, university employees, organisations working in the field of education, youth, women and concerned citizens moved towards Parliament Street, carrying banners, wearing placards round their necks and shouting slogans in various Indian languages. Thousands of teachers participate in AIFUCTO-FEDCUTA Jail Bharo programme Agitated by Government's apathy, thousands of teachers from across State and Central universities and colleges participated in the Jail Bharo Andolan under the banner of AIFUCTO-FEDCUTA to draw attention to deteriorating service conditions. They had come from Haryana, Punjab, Maharshtra, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Andhra, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. After Dharna at Jantar Mantar, where leaders representing the different states addressed the gathering, teachers courted arrest and were taken to the Police Station, Parliament Street.
